COVID-19 LOCKDOWN: TRADITIONAL HEALERS DEMAND PERMITS TO OPERATE

Although traditional healers are recognised constitutionally in South Africa, during the Covid-19 national lockdown, the practitioners are adamant that they should be deemed an essential service as their patients are in dire need of their services.
Under the lockdown one of the strict measures put in place to contain the pandemic is that South Africans are not allowed to leave their homes unless to purchase essential goods or report for work as an essential service worker.
Sector leader for traditional healers in South Africa, Mkhulu Solly Nduku says the country’s traditional health practitioners have sounded a clarion call for their services to be categorised as essential during the Covid-19 national lockdown.
“We have actually had expression from practioners from all corners of the country, especially those who have to render essential and critical services to their clients.”
He says they have received a positive response from health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize with whom traditional healing bodies met with on Saturday.
Nduku was speaking on POWER Update on Monday.
In a statement issued on Sunday, he adds, Mkhize clarified that traditional healers are recognised constitutionally under the Traditional Health Practitioners Act.
“Our practitioners, like any other pharmacy, provide medication but these herbal medical and herbal teas used for influenzas and colds,” he says adding: “Our people should be granted permits to be able to open their medicinal shop so that people who are in dire need of them can access them.”
We guide against hoaxes and charlatans who will claim they have a vaccine and cure Covid-19, he adds.
What is your take on this should traditional healers be allowed to provide the cure/ vaccine fore coronavirus or not?
